Risk Glossary
General Plan for Playing Risk
Most games begin with the OP starting a thread and asking for joiners. At this point, players should decide on team names, colors (first come, first served), starting locations for map, and signatures. Many long-term players have used the same signature for years, while others will create a new signature for each game. On /b/ Risk, players must post their signature on each post, usually at the end of the post in greentext. On other boards such as /pol/, players need only post their signature in the "Name" field (as well as generate a tripcode with #password). Players should pay close attention to any extra rules, as some OPs will create new regulations for particular games.
Once color, name, and location has been decided, players should wait for the first map update, also known as mupdate 1. OP will often let the players know when to roll. Each player is entitled to only one roll per update, but is free to chat and configure diplomacy between rolls.
Each roll should be linked to the map update, and must clearly state the intended action, the player's color or nation's name, and the nation to be attacked or the unclaimed region to be conquered.
How much territory that is won or lost per roll is determined by the player's post number, and normally only by the last digit of the post number. Refer to the map's get table for exact details.
When two players are attacking each other, the difference in get values is the amount of territory won by the higher roller. In conquering unclaimed or undefended territories, the get value (referenced from the map get table) directly translates to the number of territories gained.
Most OPs will do a very good job at keeping track of all the rolls, but sometimes an OP will miss a few. The player is expected to politely let OP know when a mistake has been made, and it is then up to OP to decide whether or not to correct it. Swearing at or insulting the OP will often lead to an ignored or kicked player.
The game concludes when only one player, team, or alliance is still surviving, or when OP or the players agree that the game is over.
Risk Glossary
- Alliance: Both players agree to defend each other throughout the game.
- Bee-line: A practice that is outlawed in most games, a bee-line is when the player instructs the OP to capture territories in a direct line from point a to point b.
- Cede: When a player gives some or all of their own territory freely to another player.
- General: An extra player who rolls for a team.
- Get: A high-value roll number which a team has either achieved or is aspiring to achieve.
- Host: See OP.
- Mupdate: A term coined by Swiss Dave, mupdate is short for map update.
- NAP: Non aggression pact. The parties to a NAP cannot attack each other without first breaking the NAP.
- Nation or Country: See Team.
- OP: The individual who is coloring the map. Not always the thread creator.
- Pali or Palindrome: A get on most maps. A palindrome must read the same forwards or backwards, and applies to the last digits of the post number. More digits are often more valuable. (Ex. 323, 4334, 5223225)
- Ragequit: To rage at a decision made by OP or another player, and then quit the game afterwards.
- Roll: Any post to the OP's map or update which directs the player's intended action.
- Roller: See General.
- Spill: If OP has completed the player's roll request, and there are any "left overs", then a spill is available which the player may then use for more conquering.
- Team: A player who is actively rolling in the game. Can be comprised of more than one person in some games.
